The latest on Snackin’ Cakes (TM!)

T

I’m really excited about our Snackin’ Cakes project!

Let’s start with the name: Snackin’ Cakes was a registered trademark of Betty Crocker/General Mills until 2018 – they gave it up just in time for us to register it.  Yes! I think it will be a perfect name for these cute little cakes.

Taste-wise, the feedback we received at the Grocery Innovation Congress was really positive – most people were just surprised that anything so tasty could be gluten free, vegan and nut free.

One of the great things about the Grocery Innovation Congress was the list of contacts I now have, ranging from helpful people employed in all 3 levels of government to the next door booth participant, Wendy West of King of Caesar Salad Dressings, a really fun person and successful entrepreneur.

Since the GIC last month, I’ve had a lot of phone calls with people I met so I am remembering back to first planning PGB when I knew nothing about bakeries. I learned then – and it is still true- that there are so many great people willing to give 10 or 15 minutes of their time to someone just starting out.

Having coffee or lunch is a thing that people do to develop business contacts but I feel that everyone is busy and likely eager to get back to their own work or personal pursuits so I always just suggest a phone call. Often a call is all that is needed to get – or give – that perfect nugget of advice.   Although no one has ever done exactly what you want to do, build or create, lots of people will have done some aspect of it and you just need to find them.

I am all for YouTube videos: Andrew has singlehandedly learned how to smoke meat using the Big Green Egg by watching YouTube videos created by friendly men who I am pretty sure live in Texas and eat a lot of pulled pork. But to create something brand new and find your way through rules, regulations and bureaucracies, you need to follow a trail of breadcrumbs i.e one call or quick meeting after another to get your answers.

I still have a long list of 2018-19 PGB changes to review in my current series but in my excitement about Snackin’ Cakes, I jumped to this topic for today’s post.  And – breaking news- we are also launching Snackin’ Cakes in traditional baking in Banana Salted Caramel and Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Icing…so cute, convenient and – of course- delicious!
